Anxiety and Isolation: Finding Your Support Network

I know all too well, the familiar feeling of feeling forever alone with this disorder. It feels as though nobody truly understands, and as though it’s a battle that only I face – even when we know there are so many others out there who face the same battle. Unfortunately, because everybody experiences anxiety differently, we are alone in our experiences.

To make things worse, anxiety in itself can be so secluding. It can stop us reaching out, seeing the people we love, and even stop us from doing day-to-day activities.

Within my journey with my anxiety, I went through a period of not wanting to leave the house – just in case something ever happened to me and I wasn’t in the safety of my own home.

Anxiety can just make us feel so alone.

Though, we’re not really alone, and I think deep down we know that, but it’s so easy to just let our anxieties consume us that we just forget that it doesn’t define who we are. If anything, it’s quite the opposite, our anxiety is a reflection of us.

It may feel as though nobody understands, and to some extent, you’re right. But we all have one thing in common – we know how awful anxiety is to live with.

I know anxiety primarily encompasses the need to constantly reassure ourselves, and it can be incredibly exhausting, but if you’re going to reassure yourself of one thing – let it be that you are not alone.

It can be hard to reach out, and admit you’re struggling, but it’s the first (and very big) step to healing.

If you’re feeling alone, I encourage you to reach out. If you have no one to reach out to, here are some resources:

The first step is acceptance, and the second is reaching out. After that, it’s a breeze.
